The stunning, snow capped peak of Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest point at 5199m. Although it is a very popular destination for climbers and trekkers, it is quite challenging. The highest peak is Batian (5199m), second is Nelion (5188m) the two peaks are technical climbs. The third peak known as Lenana (4985m) is more accessible and a good point for starters. Whether you are interested in trekking or climbing the two technical climbs, Mt. Kenya offers a great challenge for aspiring mountaineer or adventure traveler.

This is the most interesting and scenic of all the Mt. Kenya climbing routes. The route passes through enthralling tarns, incredible gorges, spectacular Lake Michealson and waterfalls.

The route begins from Kami Hut taking the trail leading to point Lenana where most trekkers end their climb. The best time to climb is from July to September when it takes around 10 hours to hike the 1,100m slope grade IV. A lot of climbers have climbed individually though you will need an ice hammer and crampons to go across the gates of mist path. Great care should be taken when passing through the Lewis glacier and scrambling to the base. The route has some distinctive climbing ropes, which are used as route markers.

Day 7  South East Face Nelion Route

This route is mostly used between January and March a season it is rated graded IV. It begins from Austrian Hut to the Nelion peak then crossing the Diamond couloirs and to the gates of Mist point Batian. The 700m ascent takes approximately 6 hours.

Day 8 Ice routes

The most used ice routes on the mountain are Ice Window and Diamond Colouir. The two ascents are approached from Two Tarn Hut and American Camp. The best season to climb is from June to October though the weather has become so unpredictable of late due to climate change.
